HP Pavillion Desktop has  orange blinking light, it blinks 5 times then cycles through. The fans are running good and the PC sometimes does this but sometimes fixes itself but it has been common for it to occur. Please help fix this problem.

It has 2 gb ram if it helps.

Documentation is missing on a lot of older HP / Compaq systems

I belive you have a Pegatron motherboard.  Light and Beep codes for a lot of the Pegatron as listed here

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-compaq-6000-pro-microtower-pc/4023814/document/ish_1997210-1...

You might try all suggestions for the 5 light blink red codes

 Basically:

blow out all dust

unplug from wall

touch finger to metal case

remove all memory sticks

examine memory edges for corrosion and clean with eraser if needed

put back in and try again.

There appears to be a diagnostic CD available here along with manuals and drivers

https://drivers.eu/PC/HP/Pavilion%20p2-1156il?page_2

If the system starts working then you could upgrade to 4gb of memory and try windows 10x64

supposedly drivers for 10 are here https://www.driverscape.com/manufacturers/hp/laptops-desktops/p2-1156il/85059

but I trust the EU site better

Win10 is still a free upgrade from 7, just install and use the 7 product code

Glad you got it working!

I just checked and windows 10 minimum requirement is either 1gb  or 2gb of memory.  I could have sworn it needed 4gb

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-system-requirements-6d4e9a79-66bf-7950-467c-7...

You will have to check your system and see if it is 32bit or 64 bit

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03666764

An upgrade to windows 10 must be the same type as windows 7.  If you have win7 home or premium 32bit then the upgrade needs to be win10 32bit home (there is no premium).  If you have the pro version of 7 then you need the pro version of win10.  Make sure you have a Certificate of authenticity (COA) sticker and can read the digits of the key that is on the COA.  You will have to use that key to activate windows 10.  It is actually a free upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit windows but that type of upgrade requires a clean install and all your programs will be erased.

Looks like you could upgrade to 16gb of memory and run windows 10 64 bit if you want

https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-ram-upgrades/hp/pavilion-desktop/p2-1156il

I would not upgrade to windows 10 unless I had a spare hard drive to test the upgrade on.  There is always the possibility that windows 10 may be missing an important driver for an older motherboard.  There may be some applications you are using that run better on win7 or not at all on win 10

If you have a spare hard drive to try windows 10 and want to try it out then post back here and I can walk you through it.
