What do you mean by External fan? Are you asking about attaching a fan to the outside of the case?

According to the maintenance guide, your motherboard only has two fan headers, one for the CPU, the other for the existing chassis fan.  There are no more headers.

You can see the motherboard on page 70 of the linked manual:  http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04529143

You would not be able to connect a third fan to the motherboard other than to power it, as there is no place to connect the three lead fan wire other than using an adapter to connect it only to a power cable from the PSU, and that would mean that the fan would run all the time as the system then would have no control lead connected for the fan.

OK, so you already have a chassis fan but it's not connected?

Or, you are looking into buying a chassis fan?

Any fan, of the right size, that comes with a three-wire connector plug will work.
