Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Ok so, cumulative update to my aging PC and then I find it has reset my PC. New Edge etc as has happened before only this time all my C drive has NO content!!!! (Except for program files) No files No Downloads nothing!!!!! Panic in the streets. Tried rebooting. Goes through a few whirls only to get the same thing. Only it also will not recover either, The system recovery will not operate. D drive is there and has content but the system restore will not work through the PC. Of course I would have the option of removing the hard drive but I wondered if anyone else has had similar issues with the latest updates or do I just use my USB drive to boot from cold or is this a virus issue? I really would like to understand why this is happening rather than consign it to just another problem Many thanks in advance. I should mention that all my desktop icons are in place but my add ons such as VPN have disappeared....its rather like a fresh new PC set up
