Hello help desk,
I am planning to buy an HP Z420 or Z620 and want to pair it with a GTX 970 but I have concerns about incompatible power supply connectors. Please answer the following:
1) Will GTX 970 work in the Z420? Z620?
2) What power supply connector adapter, if any, will I need?
Thanks,
Sam

@samleeusr, welcome to the forum.
Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for both the Z420 and Z620. On Page 33 you will find the Z420 Workstation Specifications and on Page 40 you will find the 620 Workstation Specifications. It shows the power supply unit (PSU) and video card specs. The PSU for the Z420 has one additional power dongle (6-pin) on a single 12V rail. The Z620 has two additional power dongles (6-pin & 8-pin (normally 6+2)) on two separate 12V rails. Now, see my answers to your questions below:

1) Will GTX 970 work in the Z420? Z620? The main thing is to assure that the workstation comes with Win 8 or 10 installed. The GTX 970 requires UEFI in the motherboard to run properly.
2) What power supply connector adapter, if any, will I need? You won't need any additional PSU connector adapters. Make certain which power dongles the video card requires.
Thanks,
Sam
Here are the GeForce specifications for the GTX 970. Each manufacturer can add or subtract specs depending on how they want to price the card. The specs in my link show that the card requires two additional 6-pin power dongles, but you can check the different manufacturers to see what they show. If you need two 6-pin dongles the Z620 is your workstation. Read the entire information on each workstation in the Maintenace and Service Guide that I provided. It will help you make your decision.
