Need help updating bios. I see that is it a common issue for it to say that there is low disk space when there isn't. I have 800gb free of my 1tb SSD. I have seen some solutions about trying a usb bootable drive for the bios. But I am not sure how to install it after putting it on a usb. All the steps say is turn off laptop, insert usb, turn on laptop. When I do this nothing happens. It just boots up. I don't get it.

Hi @anuragGhosh,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems you're encountering an issue where the BIOS update won't install due to a disk space error, even though there’s plenty of free space on your SSD. Using a bootable USB drive to install the BIOS update is a good option, and I can guide you through the steps to make sure you're doing it correctly.
Steps to Update BIOS Using a Bootable USB:
Download the BIOS Update:
- Go to the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model number.
- Download the BIOS update file (usually in .exe format).
Create a Bootable USB Drive:
- Insert a USB drive (at least 8GB in size) into your laptop.
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 (ensure the drive is empty before formatting).
- Use the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool or a similar tool like Rufus to make the USB drive bootable.
Copy BIOS Update to USB:
- Once your USB drive is formatted as bootable, copy the BIOS update file (usually a .bin or .exe file) to the root directory of the USB drive.
Restart and Enter BIOS:
- Shut down your laptop.
- Insert the USB drive into a USB port on your laptop.
- Power on the laptop and immediately press the Esc key or F10 to enter the BIOS setup.
Install the BIOS Update from USB:
- In the BIOS, navigate to the "Update BIOS" section (it may be listed as "Firmware Update" or something similar, depending on the model).
- Choose "Update from USB" or the option that corresponds to updating from an external drive.
- The system should detect the BIOS file on the USB drive. Select it and confirm the update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Reboot After the Update:
- Once the update is complete, the laptop will typically reboot automatically.
- Remove the USB drive when prompted to do so.
If the USB Boot Isn’t Working:
If your laptop still doesn’t boot from the USB, make sure:
Boot Order: Ensure that the USB drive is listed as the first boot device in the BIOS settings. You can change the boot order by entering the Boot Menu or BIOS setup.
- To enter the Boot Menu, press the Esc or F9 key when powering on the laptop.
- Set the USB drive as the primary boot device.

Reformat USB: Ensure the USB is properly formatted as FAT32. If you use a different format like NTFS, the BIOS might not recognize it.
USB Port: Sometimes, certain USB ports (like USB 3.0) can have issues with bootable drives. Try using a USB 2.0 port instead, if available.
After the Update:
Once the BIOS is updated, the system should no longer show the low disk space error, and you should be able to install future updates without issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
