Hi @Phil995
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing an issue where your HP Pavilion desktop starts up, but you don't see any icons or the Task Manager. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including system errors, corrupted files, or a misbehaving update. Here are some steps you can try to fix the issue:
1. Restart Your PC in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts your computer with a minimal set of drivers and services, which can help you troubleshoot issues.
To start in Safe Mode:
- Restart your computer.
- As soon as the HP logo appears, press F8 repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
- Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
- Check if your icons and Task Manager appear. If they do, it could indicate a problem with some drivers or software.
2. Try Opening Task Manager Using Shortcut
If your desktop is blank, you might still be able to open Task Manager using keyboard shortcuts.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc or Ctrl + Alt + Del and select Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens, check if any applications or processes are not responding, which could be causing the issue.
3. Run System File Checker (SFC)
A corrupted system file might be preventing your icons and Task Manager from showing up. You can run the System File Checker (SFC) to repair corrupted files.
Steps to run SFC in Safe Mode:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator:
- In Safe Mode, press Windows key + R, type cmd, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to run it as Administrator.
- In the Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
- Wait for the process to complete, and then restart your computer.
4. Check for Corrupt User Profile
Sometimes, a corrupt user profile can cause display issues. You can try creating a new user profile to see if that resolves the problem.
Steps:
- In Safe Mode, press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Family & other users.
- Click Add someone else to this PC and create a new local account.
- Log into the new account and check if the desktop and Task Manager are visible.
5. Check for Malware or Viruses
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
