HP set up support linked me to a scam tech support who said my computer was corrupted. The tried to get me to give money for a clean of my computer which I refused to do. How can this happen? I am furious with HP. They are also impossible to contact.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
There are common reasons why this happens.
Just a couple ...
First Example (less common)
The Not-HP site has actually hijacked a web site to the point where it is difficult to tell what is going on.
It happens -
HP and other legitimate companies spend a lot of money, time, and effort to track down and squash these pests.
It's a legal battle of good against evil -- the war is a constant reminder that the Internet is both wonderful and a dark and dangerous place.
=====================================
Another example
Very common - perhaps not what happened to you, but this certainly does happen to many people...
The customer inadvertently types in the wrong URL and ends up at a scam site.
What?!
It only takes ONE little "dot" (period) out of place or missing and Poof! You are not where you expect.
Beware of Fake Sites
The "Real Deal"
123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site
=================================================
Furious is expected - No one wants to be exploited.
I will forward your comments to our Moderator Team.
Should there be a response, look for a message here before the Agent contacts you using other means.
Reminder
HP will NOT suddenly call you,
HP will NOT text you,
HP will NOT just "pop up" on your screen.
Not.

Request for Review – Please Read
A request has been submitted to our HP Community moderators for review and evaluation of your concern.
Worth Noting
- Our HP Community is a peer-to-peer user group.
- We are not HP Technical Support -- We are not associated with HP Sales, Service, or Warranty.
- Our request for assistance on your behalf does not guarantee HP will respond nor does our request influence the outcome.
- The time frame (how long it takes) to receive a response from HP is not controlled by the Community.
Important
- HP does not free-post HP Support numbers on the Internet. Not. Not in secret, not in chat, not in pop-ups, and not so a nice technician can call you back, sneak into your computer, and then tell you your computer is full of bugs.
- Be wary of any posted messages in the Community containing phone or email links – these are likely scammers who mean you harm.
- Please do not post any personal information in the Community. We are a public resource.
