After a couple of hours, the computer won't let me go into any programs. Sometime the internet will work, sometimes not, but when i click on a program to open, nothing happens. If i go to "This PC" and click on it, it shows that the program wont load and everything locks, up. Another fun thing is that if i go to "Restart" or "Shut down" the computer, nothing happens. It just sits there. In order to get the computer to run again, i have to press the on/off button and it turns off, then turn it back on, only to have the same problem happen after a couple of hours. Can it be that HP computers aren't what they are cracked up to be, is there something that has a quick fix or do i have to toss it out and get a new computer (this computer is just over a year old....naturally just when the warranty expires).

Hi @barachetta,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Check for System Updates:
- Ensure your operating system and all drivers are up-to-date. You can do this via Windows Update, or by using the HP Support Assistant which may offer driver updates specific to your system.
Scan for Malware:
- Use Windows Defender or another antivirus software to perform a full system scan for malware or viruses which can cause system instability.
Update or Reinstall Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause performance issues. Use the Device Manager to check for any devices with a warning icon and update or reinstall the drivers as necessary.
Perform Disk Clean-Up:
- Use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to clear unnecessary files which might be affecting the performance.
- Consider checking Task Manager for disk usage levels; high disk usage could indicate a need for defragmentation or an issue with a specific program.
Check Startup Programs:
- Too many programs running at startup can slow your computer. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then check the Startup tab and disable any unnecessary startup programs.
Memory Check:
- Faulty RAM can cause lockups and crashes. Use the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool to check for memory issues.
- Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Windows Memory Diagnostic, and follow the onscreen instructions.
System File Checker:
- Run the System File Checker to find and repair corrupted system files:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
Safe Mode:
- Boot into Safe Mode to see if the problems persist. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, it’s likely being caused by a third-party software or service.
I hope this helps.
