Hi @cierradlta,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
It sounds like you're having trouble with a Windows Update for your HP Pavilion - 15z-cw100 CTO, specifically related to a USB driver that won't install. Here's a set of steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
Step 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Open the Start Menu and type "Troubleshoot", then select "Troubleshoot Settings".
- Scroll down and select "Additional troubleshooters" or "Other troubleshooters".
- Find and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. This will attempt to detect and fix any update-related issues automatically.
Step 2: Manually Update the USB Driver via Device Manager
- Open Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers or any device with a yellow exclamation mark.
- Right-click on the problematic USB device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If the driver doesn’t install or is already up to date, go back to Device Manager, right-click the device, and select Uninstall device. Then restart your computer—Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
Step 3: Download the Driver Manually from HP
- Visit the HP Support Page for your HP Pavilion - 15z-cw100 CTO.
- Input your laptop model and download the latest USB drivers listed for your model.
- Install the downloaded driver manually and restart your computer.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @cierradlta,
Please find the remaining steps below.
Step 4: Reset Windows Update Components
Sometimes corrupted Windows Update files cause repeated failure:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Search for cmd, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Run the following commands one by one
3. After these steps, restart your computer and try the update again.
Step 5: Use Windows Update Assistant
- Download the Windows Update Assistant from the official Microsoft page.
- Run the Update Assistant, and it will guide you through the process to install any pending Windows updates.
Step 6: Perform an In-Place Upgrade
If the problem persists, performing an in-place upgrade may help:
- Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s website.
- Run the tool and choose "Upgrade this PC now". This will reinstall Windows while keeping your files, apps, and settings intact.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
