How do I install a NEW operating system on my HP Pavilion Lap Top?

Hi @RichardV88

To install a new operating system on your HP Pavilion Laptop, follow these general steps. Before proceeding, ensure that you have backed up all important data as this process may erase your current files and operating system. Also, make sure you have the necessary installation media (such as a USB drive or DVD) with the operating system you wish to install.

Steps to Install a New Operating System:

  1. Prepare Installation Media:

    • For a USB drive, download and use a tool like the Windows Media Creation Tool (for Windows OS) to create a bootable USB drive.
    • For Linux distributions, download the ISO file and create a bootable USB using software like Rufus or UNetbootin.
  2. Enter BIOS/UEFI Settings:

    • Turn off your laptop. Immediately start pressing the ESC key after turning it back on to access the startup menu.
    • Press the appropriate key (usually F10) to enter BIOS/UEFI settings.
  3. Configure Boot Order:

    • In the BIOS setup, go to the boot order settings.
    • Set the USB drive or DVD drive as the first boot device.
  4. Boot from Installation Media:

    • Save changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI.
    • Your laptop should now boot from the installation media.
  5. Begin Installation:

    • Follow the on-screen instructions to start the operating system installation.
    • Choose your language, time and currency format, and keyboard layout.
    • Click "Install Now" or the equivalent for your operating system.
  6. Select Installation Type:

    • For a fresh installation, choose custom installation and select the drive where you want the OS installed. This will typically be the main partition of your laptop’s hard drive.
    • Be sure to format the partition if necessary.
  7. Complete Installation:

    • Follow any additional prompts to complete the installation, such as entering a product key (for Windows), setting up user accounts, and selecting your preferred settings.
  8. Install Drivers and Updates:

    • Once the new operating system is installed, ensure all necessary drivers are installed.
    • Check for system updates to ensure your system is up-to-date.
