Hello, I have a HP Pavilion and for some reason, a noise keeps popping up every 20 seconds. I can describe the noise sounding to be an object inserting something to the usb port but nothing is being inserted especially every 20 seconds. I tried restarting and updated my laptop to the most recent software, What steps can I take to remove this sound from occurring?

Hi @MelyMels

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion laptop is making a repeated noise, possibly resembling a USB device being inserted and removed. This issue can be caused by a few different things, including hardware or software conflicts, driver issues, or external devices. Let's troubleshoot the problem step by step to help you stop the noise.

1. Check for External Devices

  • Disconnect External Devices: If you have any external devices connected to your laptop, such as USB drives, external hard drives, mice, or printers, disconnect them and see if the noise stops.
  • Test USB Ports: Sometimes, an issue with a USB port (such as a loose connection or faulty port) can cause the system to think something is being connected or disconnected every few seconds.
  • If you’re using a USB hub, try connecting the device directly to the laptop.

2. Check the Device Manager for USB Issues

  • Open Device Manager: Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers": Look for any warning symbols (yellow triangles) next to USB controllers.
  • Update Drivers: If you see any issues, right-click and choose Update driver or uninstall the device and restart your computer. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
  • Disable USB Selective Suspend: In Device Manager, right-click your USB device, go to Properties, and check if USB Selective Suspend is enabled. Disable this setting and see if the issue stops.

3. Check for Power Management Settings

  • Disable USB Power Management:
    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Expand the USB controllers section.
    3. Right-click on each USB Root Hub and select Properties.
    4. Under the Power Management tab, uncheck the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
    5. Click OK and restart your computer.

This prevents the USB ports from being powered down and may stop the repeated disconnection sound.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
