Hi @Milktoast1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To change the power button’s action from “nothing” to “shutdown” on your Windows PC, you can adjust the settings through the Control Panel or Settings app. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make this change yourself:
Method 1: Using Control Panel
Open Control Panel:
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type control and press Enter to open the Control Panel.
Access Power Options:
- Click on System and Security.
- Click on Power Options.
Change What the Power Buttons Do:
- On the left side, click Choose what the power buttons do.
Change Settings:
- Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable if prompted. This may require administrative privileges.
- Scroll down to Power buttons and lid settings.
Adjust the Power Button Action:
- Under the section When I press the power button, you will see a drop-down menu.
- Select Shutdown from the drop-down menu.
Save Changes:
- Click Save changes to apply the new setting.
Method 2: Using Settings App
Open Settings:
- Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
Go to Power & Sleep:
- Click on System.
- Select Power & sleep from the left-hand menu.
Access Additional Power Settings:
- Click on Additional power settings on the right side under Related settings.
Change What the Power Buttons Do:
- Click on Choose what the power buttons do on the left side.
Adjust Settings:
- Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable if prompted.
- Under Power buttons and lid settings, change the option for When I press the power button to Shutdown.
Save Changes:
- Click Save changes to apply the new setting.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
