Hi @lps8,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To get your HP Smart Tank 5101 out of sleep mode and manage sleep settings, here are some steps you can follow.

Wake the Printer from Sleep Mode:

  • Press any button on the printer control panel to wake it up. Simply touching the display or a button should bring it out of sleep mode.

Disable or Adjust Sleep Mode (if available):

HP printers usually have a sleep timer that you can adjust or disable. Here’s how you can manage this:

Via HP Smart App:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  • Select your HP Smart Tank 5101 printer.
  • Go to the Settings or Advanced Settings tab.
  • Look for the Energy Settings or Sleep Mode option.
  • Adjust the sleep timer or set it to never if you want to cancel the sleep mode.

Via Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Obtain your printer’s IP address by printing a network configuration page from the printer control panel.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address in a web browser to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Go to System Settings or Energy Settings (under the General or Power settings section).
  • Adjust the sleep time or disable sleep mode as per your needs.

This should help in managing your HP Smart Tank 5101's sleep settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for responding, but I'm putting it in a box to return Amazon today.  I tried most that and when I did get it to wake up, it would not print,  Got an error message.  Not worth the effort.  I don't expect to have to work on a new printer to get it to work.

I have a 7301 that I finally got to work.  I had the same problem initially with it (sleep mode) and early on I spent 2 hours with hp trying to get it to work.  It didn't work exactly as it should but I waited to long to return it.  I had been frustrated with it, but I

I finally got it to work.

HP's software operating is not what it used to be.  I have mostly used hp printers ever since I bought my first 286 computer.  I never had these kind of problems.  Hp used to have the best software.  I tried tank printers from epson, but their software operation was not good.

Long story short, I when I buy a new computer, I expect it to work out of the box and continue to work.
