Example: PavilPavillion p6000 p6537c
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

f8 doesn't do anything.

On startup I get the options:

esc: boot menu. But this only goes to boot from device options.

f11 is system recovery, but there's no safe mode option on here.

f12: boot from lan

f9: diagnostics

f10: setup

I'm trying to recover a few files. When booting to windows regularly it goes to a black screen and I'm unable to do anything. the system recovery option has an option to back up files,  but it requires 1tb for some reason and I don't have anything that large.

Hi:

You have to tap the F8 key immediately after the initial splash screen disappears to get W7 into safe mode.

it is not a menu option where you see the others.

I just tried that. The splash screen disappears and there's two or three seconds where theres a blinking white cursor in the upper left and then the windows icon appears. I tapped f8 during the black screen but it just went to windows.

All I can say is keep trying.  Hold the key down, tap it...
