How to unlock Bitlocker when Microsoft Account backup email address no longer functions?

I did not activate Bitlocker, and do not know why it activated automatically after only a few days since new. Every avenue seems closed unless I can supply Microsoft with a working backup email address. That backup email address was set up "many" years ago and has likely to have been discontinued for lack of use. I have "never" had to use it for anything until now!

HP technical support just tells me I have to go through Microsoft!
