Envy all in one 27-p059na

Hi I have an Envy all in one 27-p059na. I am getting a UEFI smart detection error about my Disk 1 which is my HDD (Windows is installed on my SSD Disk 0). The drive still works so I am basically ignoring the error for now. The log says the test failed and gives me a Failure ID for Hard Drive 2. Can I replace the disk, or is there something else I can do? chkdsk says it's fine.

Hi,

 

Your operating system disk (128 GB M.2 SSD) may be good but the 2 TB HDD is probably going to fail at some point. Disk nomenclature varies. Windows Disk Management and Windows installation media IDs SATA drives as disk 0. Are you positive HP Diagnostics is zeroing in on the HDD? The following suggestions are false if the M.2 drive is failing.

 

I would back up data on the HDD ASAP. Any programs installed on the 2 TB HDD having dependencies spread across the two disks will break when this disk fails unless you have a disk image backup which you can restore to the replacement disk.

 

I use Macrium Reflect free (Link) to create disk image backups for this situation. You want Macrium Relect 8 Free Home version.

 

You can and should replace the failing drive.

Yes, it says Hard Drive 2. I think the one from the day before is Drive 1 that passed. Problem is with replacing the HDD is that I would need to figure out how to remove it and get a compatible replacement. Is this doable? Otherwise, could I not replace it with an external drive? But I'd want to be able to disable it being used, or at least disable the Smart check on it. Is this possible?

first, save your data, as recommended
If it's just added data, just copy it to another one
Smart error, maybe a fake one, it tells you, the HDD has some problem, but it may not fail
But better to take precautions
if you haven't used an internal HDD, you can actually use an external usb hdd

if not for the replaced see this, just buy a similar HDD or ssd sata

Hi,

 

Check this HP Upgrade and Service Guide (Link) for your PC.

 

You probably have a laptop/notebook HDD. This would be a 2.5 inch drive. Measure to verify.

 

You can buy a replacement part at Amazon or Newegg. You could also use an external USB drive.

 

Did you install any large programs on this drive? They will break when this drive either: fails or you replace the internal HDD. You will have to uninstall/reinstall each program if you buy an internal HDD. I don't think you will be able to install programs on the external USB drive. 

 

Back up data before proceeding.

The problem with All-in-Ones is that they are giant Notebook PCs with external keyboards and mice -- and like notebooks, you have to PRY them apart to get at the internals.

 

But unlike Notebooks, doing that is almost certainly going to cause the screen to crack and break.  I personally saw this happen recently on an All-in-One when the tech was going to replace the failing drive with an SSD.

 

So, you're risking replacing the Entre All-in-One just to replace the drive.

I am not a big AIO fan. They look good, have a small footprint but are a PITA to service.

 

I like Desktop PCs.

It doesn't sound like it's worth the risk, especially as it's working fine now. I have everything backed up in the cloud on that drive, and I have another desktop PC with its own monitor on another desk which I can use instead if need be, with the same software pretty much installed. But I also use the AIO as a monitor for my laptop and it's useful just to flip the display between the two. So it's still my PC of choice. If I could disable the error message on startup it would be helpful, but that option doesn't seem to exist in the BIOS. I did have several scheduled tasks which run on startup and I have set the BIOS up to turn the PC on every morning. Sadly all no use as this error message sits in the way requiring manual intervention.

unfortunately there is no bios simulator here, as for some models
but very likely that there is not this option
It will therefore be necessary to make do with it, if you cannot disconnect it
