@ChubbyBear,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Community! 🎉

I’m here to help you troubleshoot your issue and get things back on track. Just follow these steps below, and we’ll have you running smoothly in no time:

1. Interpret the Beep Code

  • 8 Beeps typically indicate a memory (RAM) failure in HP systems. The beeps suggest the system is not detecting your RAM correctly or it's faulty. It could also be related to a corrupted BIOS after the update.

2. Hard Reset the PC

  • Power off your PC completely.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external monitors, etc.) except for the power cable.
  • Hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Power the system back on and check if the black screen and beep persist.

3. Check RAM

If you're not comfortable with opening the PC or handling the internal components, it's best to seek professional help to avoid damaging any hardware.

  • If you’re comfortable opening the system:
    • Power off the PC and unplug it from the power source.
    • Open the case (or access panel if it’s an all-in-one).
    • Reseat the RAM sticks by carefully removing them and re-inserting them into the slots.
    • If you have more than one stick, try testing the system with only one stick of RAM at a time in different slots to rule out a faulty stick or slot.

4. Try to Access BIOS

If you're not comfortable with opening the PC or handling the internal components, it's best to seek professional help to avoid damaging any hardware.

  • Since you're unable to access the BIOS, try using a wired keyboard instead of your wireless one. Wireless keyboards sometimes fail to connect early in the boot process.
  • If that doesn’t help, attempt to reset the BIOS by clearing the CMOS:
    • Power off the system.
    • Locate the CMOS battery (a coin-cell battery) on your motherboard.
    • Remove the battery for about 5-10 minutes, then reinsert it.
    • Power on the system to see if it allows you to access the BIOS.

5. Check BIOS Recovery Options (if applicable)

  • HP systems often have a BIOS recovery feature. You can try to recover or reset your BIOS using this:
    1. Turn off the computer.
    2. Press and hold the Windows Key + B.
    3. While holding those keys, press the power button and hold it for a few seconds.
    4. Release the power button but continue holding the Windows Key + B.
    5. This should initiate the BIOS recovery process, if available.

6. Perform a System Restore (if possible)

  • If you’re able to boot into the recovery environment (via pressing F11 or ESC during startup), try performing a System Restore to roll back the system to a point before the update was installed.
    • Start the PC and press F11 to enter recovery options.
    • Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, and select System Restore.
    • Follow the prompts to restore your system to a previous state.

7. Boot into Safe Mode

  • If you can get to the Advanced Startup options:
    1. Turn off the PC.
    2. Power it on and force a shutdown by holding the power button as soon as you see the Windows logo.
    3. Repeat this process two or three times to trigger Automatic Repair.
    4. From there, navigate to Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    5. Once restarted, select Safe Mode.
    6. If you can boot into Safe Mode, uninstall any recent drivers or updates that may have caused the issue.

8. Reinstall or Update Drivers

  • If you manage to get into Safe Mode or recovery options:
    • Uninstall the drivers for the device that was updated (graphics, network, etc.).
    • Restart the system and see if the issue persists.
    • Alternatively, you could try reinstalling or rolling back the problematic drivers.

Nothing worked, ended up throwing it away! Bought a new one. Thanks for trying. I put all the salvageable parts on eBay (ChubbyFlyersSales)

@ChubbyBear,

I’m really sorry to hear that nothing worked out and that you had to part ways with your unit. I completely understand how frustrating that must have been, especially after all the troubleshooting. 😔

Thank you so much for giving it a try, though, and I hope your new laptop brings a smoother experience! 😇

If you ever need assistance again in the future, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help! 💙
