Microsoft Windows 11

Realize this has been discussed as a CPU issue; and the fix.  Mine I can't find.  Five windbg dumps have ID the package as 'contributing factor' to black screen crashes.  PROB:  I can't find the named culprit!  Have line-by-line searched 150 entries in TASK MANAGER, and is not there.  Tasked Co-Pilot, did not find it.  Where might I look to find this elusive product?  HP Pavilion desktop TP001-3000i.

Hi @saativar,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for providing those details. If WinDbg is identifying hp-plugin-executor.exe as a contributing factor, but you cannot find it in Task Manager, that is not necessarily unusual. The executable may only run when the related HP service or task launches it, so it may not be running continuously.

You can try the following to locate it:

Check the HP installation folders

Open File Explorer.

Check:

C:\Program Files\HP\

C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\

C:\ProgramData\HP\

You can also search the entire C: drive for hp-plugin-executor.exe.

Check installed HP applications

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

Search for HP applications and services, particularly HP Support Assistant, HP Insights, HP Smart, or other HP system utilities.

If you identify which HP application installed the executable, we can determine whether it can safely be repaired or removed.

Check Windows Services

Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

Look for HP-related services.

Note the names of any HP services that are currently running or set to automatic.

Let me know if it helped.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Using Co-Pilot we seem to have 'winnowed' our results to another "active" program that is not associated with HP.  As for your suggestion:  All of the HP apps are running/auto.  The only place I even found a ref to the HP-Plugin app was in task manager, History!  It showed up with <>0 impact for over a week of history.  Have no idea why it was notated in all the runs.  TKS for your answer, tho, because it does me give me another ave to research in this continuing puzzle.

Hi @saativar,

Thank you for the update and for sharing what you found.

Since hp-plugin-executor.exe is appearing only in Task Manager history and not as an actively running process, let's try a few additional steps to identify which HP component is launching it:

1. Check the file location

  • Open Task Manager.
  • Go to Details and look for hp-plugin-executor.exe if it appears.
  • Right-click it and select Open file location.
  • Note the folder in which the executable is located.

If it is not currently running, search for hp-plugin-executor.exe from File Explorer on the C: drive and note its location.

2. Check the file properties

  • Right-click the executable and select:
  • Properties > Details
  • Check the Product name, Company, and File version fields.
  • This can help identify which HP component it belongs to.

3. Check HP applications

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  • Review the installed HP applications and note any recently updated or installed HP software.

4. Check Task Scheduler

  • Press Windows + R.
  • Type taskschd.msc and press Enter.
  • Select Task Scheduler Library.
  • Look for HP-related scheduled tasks.
  • Check whether any task references hp-plugin-executor.exe.

Let me know how it goes.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,
