Hi @S140,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you are unable to access the C drive and update Windows on your computer, it could be due to several reasons, such as file system corruption, permissions issues, or malware. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Disk for Errors
Use the built-in Check Disk utility to scan for and repair errors on the C drive:
Run Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Win + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
Run Check Disk Command:
- Type chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter.
- You may be prompted to schedule the scan for the next restart. Type Y and press Enter.
- Restart your computer to let Check Disk run and repair any errors it finds.
2. Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM
These tools can help repair system files:
Run Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Win + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
Run SFC:
- Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
- Wait for the scan to complete and follow any instructions provided.
Run DISM:
- Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.
- Wait for the process to complete. This can take some time.
3. Check Permissions on C Drive
Ensure you have the necessary permissions to access the C drive:
Open File Explorer:
- Press Win + E to open File Explorer.
Check C Drive Properties:
- Right-click on the C drive and select Properties.Go to the Security tab and ensure your user account has full control. If not, you may need to adjust the permissions.
4. Scan for Malware
Malware can sometimes cause access issues and prevent updates:
Use Windows Security:
- Press Win + I to open Settings.Go to Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Run a full scan to check for and remove any malware.
5. Free Up Disk Space
Ensure you have enough free space on your C drive:
- Disk Cleanup:
- Press Win + R, type cleanmgr, and press Enter.Select the C drive and follow the prompts to clean up unnecessary files.
6. Update Windows
Try updating Windows manually:
Use Windows Update Troubleshooter:
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
