Hi so my sister gave me her exs laptop as she no longer uses it because she can’t gain access to the admin account (her exs) and the only account that is accessible is my sisters but I can’t download anything due to needing the admin password. I can’t give admin rights to my sisters account because I need the admin users password. Is there anyway I can reset the whole laptop without needing the admin password and any sort of usb or disc? Any help is greatly appreciated as I need this laptop for studies. Thank you

Hi @Lizzi2005,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you need to reset the laptop to get a fresh start, but you're stuck because of the admin account restrictions. Luckily, there might be a way to reset it without needing the admin password or external media.

Try this:

  1. Reset from Windows Settings (if possible):
    • If you can access the settings, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery
    • Click Reset this PC and choose Remove everything
    • If prompted for an admin password, this method won’t work.

  2. Reset from Advanced Startup Options:
    • Restart the laptop and while it's booting, press Shift + Restart
    • Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC
    • Choose Remove everything
    • If your device allows it, this should wipe all accounts and start fresh.

  3. Use the Recovery Mode During Startup:
    • Power off the laptop, then turn it on while pressing F11 (on HP laptops).
    • This should take you to Recovery Manager
    • Look for the option to Reset the PC or Restore to factory settings.

If these don’t work because of admin restrictions, you might need a USB or external recovery method after all.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
