HP Pavilion Desktop - TP01-0014
Microsoft Windows 11

I was going to buy a new tower,  and then thought about upgrading this one that I have. Is that possible? What I need out of this upgrade would be a faster processor as most WFH jobs that I have been looking at require a ICore5 or better. Is this possible to upgrade this tower? I do not know how to check the BIOS to check for this.

@JustMe743,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

There are definitely upgrade paths available for your HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-0xxx system. Depending on what motherboard you got: either a Rother motherboard (SSID: 8653), you can upgrade to an i7-9700, or if you got an Erica motherboard (SSID: 8643), you can upgrade your PC with a Ryzen 7 3700X.

The specs suggests that your HP Pavilion Desktop - TP01-0014 (6YQ62AA) is fitted with an underwhelming i3-8100, so upgrading to an i7-9700 would be a very significant upgrade indeed: UserBenchmark: Intel Core i3-8100 vs i7-9700.

Type in: System Information in your lower Windows search bar, click on the System Information app, and you can see what processor you got, and what your BIOS version is.

If you are so inclined, please share this information.

Kind Regards,

@JustMe743,

OK, this is interesting.

Your PC is fitted with an i3-8100 as the specs I looked at said it would -meaning, your SSID ("BaseBoard Product" -please check your System Information again) got to be 8653, which is the Rother motherboard.

Now, looking at your PC's BIOS/driver update (download) page here: HP Pavilion Desktop - TP01-0014 Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support, the BIOS version you say is installed in your PC actually 'belongs' to the Baker motherboard (SSID: 8767).  I know this, because the newest Baker motherboard (SSID: 8767) BIOS version happens to be F.21.

It is impossible that you got the Baker motherboard, because the Baker motherboard is only compatible with Intel Core 10th gen processors, not 8th or 9th gen Intel Core processors.

Meaning, unless I was asleep when they taught HP 101, it looks to me that someone installed the wrong BIOS in your PC.  Not to worry, the F.20 BIOS apparently didn't cause your PC to crash or something, but let's just do the right thing here, so to speak, and install the correct BIOS in your PC.

So, the BIOS/drivers page for your PC shows two BIOS versions: F.32 and F.37.  I would recommend that you start installing the F.32 BIOS first, followed by F.37.

You can purchase an i7-9700 for around $126, such as this purchase option via a top-rated, trusted eBay Seller: Intel Core i7-9700 3.00GHz 8-Core 8.0GT/s LGA1151 65W CPU Processor SRG13 | eBay.  If you were to 'shop' around yourself, make sure you buy a working i7-9700, not one 'for parts only', or an i7-9700K, an i7-9700T, or an i7-9700F (unless you got a separate graphics card), or one that is designated as an "Intel Confidential" model.

Anyway, swapping a processor is relatively easy: if you were to go for it, I'll share a nice YouTube instructional video.

Kind Regards,

Yes it is BaseBoard Product 8653, so should I download the Bios before get the I7-9700 or wait when I have it ready to be upgraded

@JustMe743,

Outstanding!

No reason to wait to upgrade your BIOS until you get the i7-9700!

Go ahead with the BIOS upgrading as mentioned.
