Hi @DHickerson,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with the keyboard input on your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One printer. Typically, you shouldn't need to hold down keys for an extended period to input letters or numbers on a printer. The keyboard input on the printer should work like a standard keyboard where you press a key, and the corresponding letter or number appears on the screen.

If you're facing difficulties with the keyboard input on your printer, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Check for Physical Obstructions: Make sure there are no physical obstructions around the keys that could be preventing them from working correctly. Dust or debris may interfere with key presses.
  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, simply restarting the printer can resolve minor issues. Turn off the printer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Update Firmware/Software: Check if there are any firmware or software updates available for your printer. Updating the printer's software can often resolve compatibility or performance issues.
  • Reset to Factory Settings: If the problem persists, you may consider resetting the printer to its factory settings. Be aware that this will erase any custom settings you have configured on the printer, so make sure to back up any important data or settings first.

Remember that the keyboard on your printer should work smoothly without the need to hold down keys for an extended period.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
