Make a backup of all data folders to an external USB or hard drive. You can just drag and drop folders. Unplug all external drives/printers. Connect an Ethernet cable to your modem. (Faster). Go here, and start the upgrade process called "update now". Later you can download the newest printer software from their site.

You really need to separate your issues.
A computer that will not boot to a desktop is not an issue of not being able to get on line. It is a NON-boot issue.
What options did you try. Saying i followed various re-boot options is a tad vague. Specify ?
