Hi @Ruth-m,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "No boot disc has been detected or the disc has failed" error typically indicates that your system is unable to find the operating system to boot from. This can happen for various reasons, such as a malfunctioning hard drive, incorrect BIOS settings, or a corrupted bootloader. Here’s a series of steps to help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Check Boot Order in BIOS

  • Restart your computer and press the BIOS key (usually F10, Esc, F2, or Delete depending on the HP model) as soon as the HP logo appears.
  • In the BIOS menu, check the Boot Order or Boot Priority. Ensure that your primary hard drive (usually named something like "Windows Boot Manager") is set as the first boot device. If the hard drive isn’t listed or is set lower than another device (like USB or CD), change the order so the hard drive is prioritized.

Disconnect External Devices

  • Remove any external drives, USB devices, or SD cards that might be causing the system to attempt to boot from those devices instead of the internal hard drive.

Run Hard Drive Diagnostics

  • In BIOS, there may be an option for Diagnostics (like HP PC Hardware Diagnostics). Run the hard drive test to see if any issues are detected with your disk.

Check Hard Drive Connections

  • If you are comfortable working inside your PC and it’s a desktop, turn off the system and unplug it. Open the case and check the connection of the hard drive to the motherboard and power supply. Ensure all cables are secure.

Use Windows Recovery or Repair

  • If the BIOS detects the hard drive, but the issue persists, you might need to repair the boot sector.
  • You’ll need a Windows installation USB or DVD. If you don’t have one, you can create a bootable Windows installation USB using another computer.
    • Insert the installation media into your HP PC.
    • Restart your PC and press Esc or F9 to open the boot menu, and select your USB or DVD drive to boot from.
    • Once the Windows installation screen appears, select Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

Rebuild Boot Configuration Data (BCD)

  • If startup repair doesn’t solve the issue, you can try rebuilding the BCD manually. You can access the Command Prompt from the same Advanced options menu where you found Startup Repair.
  • In Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

  • After the commands complete, restart your system.

Check Hard Drive for Failure

  • If diagnostics or the repair process indicates a failing hard drive, you might need to replace the drive. Before doing so, if possible, back up any critical data if the drive is still somewhat operational.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
