D = Hard drive

@Richie741

The letter "D" is a VOLUME on a physical drive, not the entire drive -- and this is important because Windows is installed to "C" by default, not to "D".  The letter "D" is commonly associated with the Recovery Drive on HP PCs, and you certainly do NOT want to install to that drive.

I you have connected a second drive, created a volume on it, and THAT volume is "D" -- then to install to it, you boot from the install media and select that volume.  It is a s simple as that.
