I did a reset and kept my files.  However I lost administration rights.  Is this an easy fix for someone that is not familiar with computers?

Hi @sjohnson_25,

I have done Microsoft resets, HP factory reinstalls, and clean W10 installs. W10 has defaulted to the admin configuration after each operation.

I always create a second admin account. Then I set the normal user account to a standard account for additional security.

What leads you to believe you don't have administrative rights?

Regards

Unfortunately, no -- without Admin rights, you can't obtain Admin rights.

So WHY did you do a reset? What was the problem you were trying to solve?

Grzwacz,

Yes it defaulted back to the original but I don't remember the password.

I made a new user account before the reset but I wasn't able to change the normal account to standard.  I believe this is where I made my mistake somehow but not able to fix it after the fact.

I'm not able to make any changes/updates and each time the user control box comes up, the "yes" icon is missing.

Thanks for responding to my issue.

WAWOOD:

I did a reset because I thought it would take me back to the original windows like it stated and I could start over.

I kept getting a "HpHwDiag cannot run under a standard user account error"  and couldn't figure out how to correct it.

I also received the blue screen with a stopcode error "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED  saying bthhfenum.sys failed.

Thanks for responding.

The way I have run HP Diags is from the BIOS settings screen, not from inside Windows.

Press the ESC key, or F10 key, repeatedly while rebooting.  When the HP Startup Menu appears, select the option to run  HP diags -- usually F2.
