I want to install Windows 11 on my HP laptop, but when I go to the boot menu, it asks for a BIOS password that I don't know. What's the solution for this?

@naveed1213,  Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding windows 11 installation!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP laptop is asking for a BIOS password when accessing the boot menu, here are some possible solutions:

1. Try Default HP BIOS Passwords

HP does not have universal default passwords, but some models may use admin, password, or 123456 by default. If these don’t work, move to the next step.

2. Check for a Password Hint or Ask the Previous Owner

If you purchased the laptop second-hand or someone else set up the BIOS password, check with them.

3. Reset BIOS Using the “Administrator Password or Power-on Password” Screen

  • If you enter the wrong password multiple times (usually 3 to 5 times), your laptop may display a System Disabled code.
  • Note down this code and visit HP’s official support or use third-party BIOS unlock services to generate a reset key.

4. Remove the CMOS Battery (For Older Laptops)

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect the power supply.
  • Open the back panel (if accessible) and locate the CMOS battery (a small coin-cell battery).
  • Remove it for 5–10 minutes, then reinsert it.
  • Power on the laptop and check if the BIOS password is reset.

Note: Newer HP models may store BIOS passwords in firmware memory, making this method ineffective.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
