Enter BIOS SETUP, and check that the integrated network-card is "enabled", not "disabled".

Otherwise, it's possible that the hardware has failed.

Simple bypass is a $10 add-in Ethernet networking card, connected to a PCI slot on your desktop's motherboard.

It's also possible that the BIOS update messed up the option rom for the network card.

It didn't work before the bios update and not adres the update. It's a laptop, so $ 10 doesn't do the job

If it is possible to roll back your BIOS thur UFEI? HP has made it diffcult to roll back BIOS updates. Or try test network thur UFEI.

Thanks for the additional information.

You did post to "Desktop Operating Systems and Recovery", not to the "laptop/notebook" section.

Got a spare USB port?

If so, see:   StarTech.com Compact Black USB 2.0 to 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Network Adapter

for under $20.

Or, since it's a laptop, just use its built-in WiFi for Internet access.

Thanks for this Grzwacz

Yep, I did spot in the news elsewhere last Fri (?) that things started to move quickly on that front. I'm not surprised at all.

Hopefully that will push both HP and Intel to pull their fingers more promptly and accelerate dev, test & patches release.

Meanwhile HP bulletin:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05869091

remains on v7, with date=TBD shown for all affected PCs (those on the list, that is).

Now I see that most of the updates is to be TDB on HP site.  I remember from before that HP said that there will be an update for HP Omen 870-xxx on Feb. 9th which  is today and now change to to be TBD. Wondering what happen with this that there will be no release till later. Any idea with this.

Yes, the 'TBD' shown in the updated document replaced the date in the original document, because INTEL told HP (and others) that the first-generation update was causing issues, including unexpected reboots.  So, INTEL recommended that the update *NOT* be used.  HP responded by updating the document, and removing their fix from the HP Support web-site.  What will happen will be for INTEL to issue a new advisory, and for HP to issue updates.

Correct, and things are moving on, albeit slowly:

https://www.askwoody.com/2018/intel-says-its-new-spectre-busting-skylake-firmware-patch-is-ready/

Closing lines from Woody worth considering:

Folks, you’d have to be absolutely batbox crazy to install these new BIOS/UEFI patches as they’re being rolled out. Give them time to break other peoples’ machines — or to prove their worth in open combat. I’m sure the folks who made the new firmware are quite competent and tested the living daylights out of everything. But they did that the last time, too.

Again, I repeat, for emphasis, there is exactly NO known Meltdown or Spectre-based malware out in the wild.

Hi Krzymein

As I climb out from bell tower, bats. Malware and virus are attach to something. Is Meltdown and Spectre be capable in  attaching to  java files only?  I do not know how it spreads?

PS Sorry for misspelling your name, spellin checker isnt much help
