That happened to me in the beginning too! Clicking the turn off button caused the error immediately. To me, it reinforces the idea that there's something wrong with HP/MS Windows Defender. Right now I have windows defender turned off by installing another AV program without trying to use windows defender settings. It just automatically disables it. Of course I've only had my system back for about a day or so and that proves nothing with this problem because it worked for 3 days last time before starting again. I can't seem to get the registry thing to work because it says "in use" when I try to open the config file or key or whatever.

KB4556799 seems to be the culprit on my pc. Last night I did a fresh install with a new ssd. After update, I started getting BSOD randomly. I reinstalled Windows 10 again and delayed KB4556799 update for 7 days and now its working fine. You could uninstall through update history too.

I started with this trouble this morning - Windows updates were downloaded to my NEW computer like a half hour before. I took the machine back to Staples and they told me the hard drive is corrupted? Are they lying to me? Can I get reimbursed? I just bought this computer two months ago in March and this is awful.

It feels like my wallet has been lightened by about $230 for a new hard drive (this is what Staples said it needs) and a warranty plan (because they insinuated this is the way it goes with Hewlett Packard). I tried with the virtual assistant this morning and it was no help whatsoever. My computer is under warranty and they had better cover this - this is awful.

I can't definitively say it's NOT your hard drive, but considering how many of us are encountering this issue AND have done the proper hardware scans with passing results, I'm more inclined to believe you are having the same software issue as most of us. One way to check is do a system restore (hopefully you have a restore point) and if not, "Reset your PC", but with the keep personal files option. You should be able to boot up and go back in..........until who knows what, causes the next BSOD cycle.
Note: depending on when your restore point was created, you might need to restore an earlier one.

I would definitely get a refund on all of that, as it is almost likely not related at all. Talk to a store manager if you need to, as they were clearly just trying to make a sale. Follow the steps to completely deactivate Defender in the registry and see if it helps. I have been working around the clock without issue since doing that.

We've tried the reset and restore. The only restore point I had was from 7:30 AM this morning so I probably downloaded what caused the problem to begin with. Was unable to uninstall the updates. The problem just kept getting worse and worse to the point where I could no longer get to the log in screen.
