Randomly the following keys are not working on my HP Desktop - 301140P keyboard.

e r u I o p

After several attempts with HP Support (days) I have reset the computer to factory settings, updated all drivers and even brought a wired keyboard - same issue.  Tried wired keyboard connected to laptop and same issue.  This makes NO sense to me at all.

HP wants to send me another keyboard and says that will fix the issue - clearly it won't if a WIRED keyboard is doing the same thing.

Has anyone else had this issue or have any suggestions.  I need this desktop for work and It's past the return period for the store and HP wants to replace the keyboard and then me send the computer out for "repair" even though I am still in my warranty period.  I've only had it since the middle of August.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi @MarieT1010,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you’re describing with multiple keyboards failing to work properly on the same device strongly suggests that the problem lies with the system itself rather than the keyboards. Here are some possibilities and troubleshooting steps

Software/Driver Issue

  • Uninstall/Reinstall Keyboard Drivers:
    1. Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
    2. Expand Keyboards.
    3. Right-click your keyboard and choose Uninstall device.
    4. Restart your computer to reinstall drivers automatically.
  • Test with a Clean Boot:
    1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    2. Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
    3. Restart your computer and test if the issue persists.
  • Check if a third-party application is causing interference.

Hardware Conflict or USB Port Issues

  • Test the wired keyboard in all available USB ports.
  • Ensure there’s no USB hub or extension cable between the keyboard and the computer.
  • Disconnect all other peripherals to rule out a hardware conflict.

BIOS Settings

  • Reset BIOS Defaults:
    1. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS (usually by pressing F10, Del, or another key during startup).
    2. Look for an option to Load Defaults or Reset to Factory Settings.
  • Check if the issue persists after resetting the BIOS.

Keyboard Layout and Language

  • Verify the keyboard layout:
    1. Go to SettingsTime & LanguageLanguage & Region.
    2. Ensure the correct keyboard layout is selected (e.g., US QWERTY).

Interference from Malware

  • Run a full system scan using a trusted antivirus program to rule out malware causing the issue.

Testing on Another Device

  • If the wired keyboard exhibits the same problem on other devices, it might point to a keyboard-specific issue.
  • If it works fine on other devices, the problem is likely with your computer.

Operating System Issues

  • If the issue persists despite resetting to factory settings, consider performing a clean installation of Windows.

Motherboard/USB Controller Issue

  • A fault in the motherboard or USB controller could cause sporadic issues with input devices. If all software-level troubleshooting fails, the hardware may need inspection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
