The HP laptop running Windows 11 experiences unexpected shutdowns and reboots (Event ID 41 – Kernel-Power). Despite updating all drivers, installing the latest patches, and re-installing updates, the issue persists. Event Viewer logs show multiple errors, including:

  • Smart card logon certificate error on a non-domain joined computer
  • Power Manager input suppression request
  • DCOM server registration timeout
  • .NET Runtime profiling API initialization failure (HRESULT: 0x80004005)
  • Missing sysmain.dll extensible counter DLL

Hi @adil403,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must feel when your laptop suddenly shuts down or reboots, especially after you’ve already tried updating drivers and installing patches. That kind of unpredictability can really disrupt your workflow and peace of mind. Let’s work through this together step by step and get your system back to being reliable.

Why This Happens

Event ID 41 (Kernel-Power) usually means the system lost power unexpectedly, either due to hardware, power settings, or system corruption. The additional errors you mentioned (Smart Card logon, Power Manager suppression, DCOM timeout, .NET Runtime, missing sysmain.dll) suggest there might be deeper OS-level issues or power management conflicts.

Step 1: Check Hardware Health

  1. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
    • Run System Tests (Quick Test first, then Extensive Test if needed).
    • If any component fails, note the failure ID and contact HP Support.
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Guide

Step 2: Reset Power Settings

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

This resets all power plans to default and removes any conflicting settings.

Step 3: Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup
    HP Guide: Disable Fast Startup

Step 4: Repair System Files

Run these commands in Command Prompt (Admin):
                sfc /scannow
                DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This will repair missing or corrupted files like sysmain.dll.

Step 5: Update BIOS & Chipset

  • Official HP® Support.
  • Enter your laptop model and download the latest BIOS and Chipset drivers.
Updating these can resolve power management and DCOM issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
