Hi. Why can't I wake my computer up with the mouse when it's hibernating or in sleep mode? I have to turn it on using the computer's power button, and it takes quite a while. Thanks—I hope you can help me.

Hi @Sandy362,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

To allow your mouse to wake your HP laptop, you need to enable the "Allow this device to wake the computer" setting in Windows Device Manager. If the laptop takes a long time to wake or requires the power button, it may be set to Hibernate instead of Sleep, or Fast Startup might be interfering.

Follow these steps to fix your settings:

1. Allow Your Mouse to Wake the PC:

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.

  2. Click the arrow to expand the Mice and other pointing devices section.

  3. Right-click your mouse (e.g., HID-compliant mouse) and select Properties.

  4. Go to the Power Management tab. If you do not see it, click Change Settings first.

  5. Check the box next to Allow this device to wake the computer, then click OK

2. Disable "Fast Startup":

Fast Startup sometimes conflicts with wake functions and causes slow boot times.

  1. Open the Control Panel.

  2. Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

  3. Click Choose what the power buttons do on the left menu.

  4. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable (you will need administrator rights).

  5. Uncheck Turn on fast startup, then click Save changes.

Note on Sleep vs. Hibernate:

If the computer is in Hibernate (saves your session to your hard drive and turns off completely), it will not wake up with a mouse click and takes longer to start. To adjust this, go to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings and expand Sleep to ensure the PC is set to Sleep rather than Hibernate.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
