Can anyone help me with this problem?  I've tried troubleshooting and HP Support Assistant to no avail.

Things wrong with computer:

  • Sometimes the computer won’t power up.
  • Computer partly powers up after sleep and then powers off.
  • Mouse was working wrong.  I had to change USB.
  • Sheet feed scanner working erratically.
  • Not all attachments in emails get transferred.
  • When clicking on an icon in the startup window a new window pops up but behind the startup window.  The startup window doesn’t disappear as it’s supposed to do.
  • Cursor hanging up.
  • Seagate External Hard Drive flashing and not coming on.
  • Light flashing constantly next to computer power-on light.

Hi Bill_To

Thank you very much for your comprehensive look at my computer problem.  I ran the System File Checker and it found and corrected some corrupted files as a result of which my mouse worked properly in later tests.  I ran Chkdsk and HP Diagnostics.  I can only tell that the mouse is better but the other problems have remained.  As for the later suggestions in your post, I think I'll have to have an engineer in to have a look at things.

Many thanks.

Hi @BloggsFred

Maybe you have some malware going on. It would not be very stealthy malware since your PC is out of control.

Wow, you have so much stuff going on it is tough to zero in on any one component or a possible system file or driver corruption problem.

Run The System File Checker tool. Run a Chkdsk.

Run HP Diagnostics at startup. Start the PC. Repeatedly tap 'ESC",

Select "F2". Run System and Component tests.

Some of the weird stuff normally suggests a RAM or HDD hardware or file corruption problem.

Here is your list of your PC problems with some, but not all, possible causes:

Things wrong with computer:

  • Sometimes the computer won’t power up. Power supply, power button, or MB problem.
  • Computer partly powers up after sleep and then powers off. Power supply or other component problem.
  • Mouse was working wrong.  I had to change USB. MB USB controller or USB driver, or specific USB port problem.
  • Sheet feed scanner working erratically. A printer issue or a USB/MB problem.
  • Not all attachments in emails get transferred. Failing HDD, or HDD corruption, or RAM.
  • When clicking on an icon in the startup window a new window pops up but behind the startup window.  The startup window doesn’t disappear as it’s supposed to do. HDD issue or a RAM problem.
  • Cursor hanging up. HDD or RAM issue.
  • Seagate External Hard Drive flashing and not coming on. HDD issue. Power supply or MB problem.
  • Light flashing constantly next to computer power-on light. I guess a HDD issue possibly hardware or file corruption. Or you have an out of control process running.
