Hi HP, I have two problems to show you. The first is that I use the HP Recovery Tool procedure on my 128 GB USB drive, but at the end, when it shows 'calculate file hash,' it stays like that for a long time, and after that, it says it failed to do things on my USB drive. However, it still has the boot files and says there was a download media error, I think. Then it shows error code XC00405. Also, after that, I insert the USB drive, turn off the computer, turn it on while pressing ESC quickly, and then F9 appears to boot, but my USB drive doesn’t show up. Please help me.

Hi @KITBLOX,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Recovery USB creation failing with error XC00405 and USB not appearing in the F9 Boot Menu. Let’s go through a few checks.

Prepare the USB Drive Properly

Use a USB drive between 32 GB and 128 GB capacity.

Back up any data on the USB drive.

Insert the USB drive into the computer.

Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT using File Explorer.

Safely remove and reconnect the USB drive.

Note: Avoid using USB hubs during recovery media creation.

Run HP Cloud Recovery Tool Again

Restart the computer.

Connect to a stable internet connection.

Insert the USB drive directly into the computer.

Open HP Cloud Recovery Tool as Administrator.

Recreate the recovery media and wait until completion.

Note: Error XC00405 usually occurs when the download or USB write process is interrupted.

Enable USB Boot in BIOS

Turn the computer off.

Turn it on and repeatedly press ESC.

Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

Open Boot Options.

Ensure USB Boot is enabled, then save changes.

Test USB in Boot Menu

Insert the recovery USB drive.

Turn the computer off.

Turn it on and press ESC repeatedly.

Press F9 for Boot Device Options.

Check if the USB drive appears in the list.

Try Another USB Port or Drive

Insert the USB into a different USB port.

Avoid USB-C adapters if possible.

Restart the computer.

Open the Boot Menu again using ESC then F9.

Check for the USB device.

Note: If the USB does not appear in the boot menu, the recovery media was likely not created successfully or the USB drive is not bootable.

Hi @KITBLOX,

Thanks for you response and I understand you’re experiencing issues with creating recovery media and boot errors, and I’ll help clarify the situation.

Key Points to Consider

  • USB Drive Quality: Recovery media creation requires a reliable USB drive. Very low-cost or counterfeit drives often cause errors during formatting or file writing. A genuine, branded USB drive (typically 32 GB or larger) is strongly recommended.
  • HP Cloud Recovery Tool: This tool downloads the recovery image and prepares the USB drive automatically. If the process fails, it usually indicates either:
    • The USB drive is faulty or incompatible.
    • The download was corrupted.
    • There is insufficient space or formatting issues.
  • BitLocker / Bootx64.efi Errors: These messages can appear if the recovery media was not created correctly or if the USB drive cannot be read properly during boot.

Recommended Steps

  1. Try a Different USB Drive
Use a genuine USB drive with at least 32 GB capacity.
  2. Re-run HP Cloud Recovery Tool
  3. Boot from Recovery Media
    • Insert the prepared USB drive.
    • Restart your PC and press F9 to access the Boot Menu.
    • Select the USB drive to start recovery.
  4. If Errors Continue
  • Double-check that Secure Boot is enabled in BIOS.
  • Try recreating the media on another PC if possible.
  • If the issue persists, you may need to order official recovery media directly from HP Support.

I hope this helps.
