I was trying to turn on my computer when the error code, 0x2004 came up. My friend told me to press some buttons and then it popped up. I don’t know what to do now. I’ve tried everything

Hi @EML3548,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your computer and the issue where you’re seeing error 0x2004 during startup even though nothing appears physically wrong. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm what type of error 0x2004 is
– On HP laptops, 0x2004 usually appears in the Startup Menu or Diagnostics screen.
– It indicates a firmware or boot-configuration problem, not a hardware failure.

Perform a Hard Reset
– Turn the computer off → unplug charger → hold the power button for 15 seconds.
– This clears temporary firmware corruption that may trigger error 0x2004.

Enter the Startup Menu
– Turn on the laptop and repeatedly tap Esc.
– If the menu appears, choose F2 – System Diagnostics.
– If diagnostics run normally with no failures, the hardware is fine.

Load Default BIOS Settings
– From the Startup Menu → press F10 for BIOS.
– In BIOS, choose Restore Defaults or Load Setup Defaults.
– Save and exit to reset incorrect boot settings.

Check Boot Device
– In BIOS → navigate to System ConfigurationBoot Options.
– Make sure your internal SSD/HDD is listed and enabled.
– If it’s missing, reseating or reconnecting the drive may be needed.

Try UEFI Hardware Diagnostics directly
– Turn on → press EscF2 → run “Quick Test.”
– If everything passes, the error is software/boot related, not hardware.

Repair Windows Boot Loader
– If you have a Windows USB installer, boot from it (Esc → F9).
– Choose Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Startup Repair.
– This fixes corrupted boot files that can trigger error 0x2004.

Undo the accidental button combo
– If your friend pressed keys that opened the diagnostics environment, the system may now be stuck trying to run a failed test.
– Performing the BIOS defaults + hard reset normally clears this.

I hope this helps.
