Hi @Chrisg1983,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Laptop PC 15s is stuck on "Starting Automatic Repair" and then just spins, it might be facing a serious issue with its operating system or hardware. Here’s how you can try to perform a factory reset.
Using Windows Recovery Environment
Turn Off Your Laptop:
- Hold the power button until the laptop shuts down completely.
Enter Windows Recovery Environment:
- Turn the laptop on and immediately start pressing the F11 key repeatedly until you see the recovery environment screen. If F11 doesn’t work, try Esc, F8, or Shift + F8 depending on your model.
Navigate to Reset Options:
- Once in the recovery environment, select Troubleshoot.
- Choose Reset this PC.
Choose Reset Option:
- You will see options to either Keep my files or Remove everything. Choose Remove everything if you want a full factory reset.
Follow On-Screen Instructions:
- Follow the prompts to complete the factory reset. This process will reinstall Windows and may take some time.
Using Recovery Media
If the recovery environment doesn’t work, you can use recovery media (like a USB drive) to perform a factory reset:
Create Recovery Media:
- On another working computer, download the Windows 10/11 installation media from the Microsoft website or use the recovery media that came with your laptop.
Boot from Recovery Media:
- Insert the recovery USB drive into your HP Laptop.
- Restart your laptop and press the F9 key (or Esc and then F9) to access the boot menu. Select the USB drive to boot from it.
Access Recovery Options:
- Once booted from the USB drive, select Repair your computer.
Select Reset Option:
- Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose Remove everything to perform a factory reset.
Complete Reset:
- Follow the instructions to complete the reset.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
