Hi @Sylviasilly,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand the concern here. When the desktop displays a message asking to “Install an operating system on your hard drive,” it usually means the computer is unable to detect Windows properly, or the hard drive is not being detected during startup.

Let us first check whether the hard drive is being recognized by the system hardware.

Please try the following steps:

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Turn the desktop completely OFF.
  2. Turn it back ON and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
  4. Select:
    • Component Tests
    • Then choose Storage or Hard Drive Test
  5. Run both the Quick Test and, if available, the Extensive Test.

Please let the tests complete fully.

  • If the test passes, the issue may be related to missing or corrupted Windows files, and we can then try HP Recovery or Windows reinstallation.
  • If the test shows a Failure ID or hard drive error, please share the exact message so we can guide you further.

If the hard drive passes the test, please then try accessing HP Recovery:

Try HP Recovery

  1. Restart the desktop.
  2. Immediately tap the F11 key repeatedly.
  3. If Recovery Manager opens, select:
    • Troubleshoot
    • Then, reset this PC or System Recovery

If recovery does not open, Windows may need to be reinstalled using recovery media or  HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows | HP® Support.

Please share the results of the hardware test or any error message shown on the screen, and we’ll continue helping from there.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
