HP Pavilion 23 Touchscreen
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My screen is totally black except for a small box that asks for Startup Password.  I cannot get past this.  Can anyone help me?

@Jamie73

I am a Microsoft representative and I have received that same phone call at least 6 times.

My mother lives by herself and has been called 4 or 5 times and she does not have a computer.

I am glad to see that you are at least back up and running.

Best regards,

Yes, my startup screen looks exactly like that.  But, I donot know the password.

That is a password setup with SYSKEY.

Did you allow someone to log onto your laptop lately???

I am not sure if anyone logged in other than me.  I am not sure what a SYSKEY is.  Is it fixable?

Oh, I did get caught up in a fake Microsoft Virus scam.  Would that have anything to do with this Startup Password  problem that I am experiencing?  I appreciated any help you are able to give me.

Sorry but you got scammed.

You need to try to restore to a time before you allowed them to log onto your computer.

Sometimes they will remove restore dates so you can not do this.

For W10 I am not sure of all the options to remove it.

I will look into it more but if you can not restore to an earlier date do a complete system restore.

Again sorry.

Thank you so much for your help.  You are absolutely right, I was scammed and they installed a password on my computer that I was not able to penetrate.  I took my computer to the repair store and it had to be set it back to the original factory level.  I hope no one else falls for the call where the caller says "I am from Microsoft and I see that you just installed Windows 10 and I need to look at your computer."  That is the scam I got caught up in and have learned a big lesson from.  Thanks again.
