What is your machine ? I don't know what your  external HDD drive SMART is, its physical parts may not the SAME as normal internal HDD's.

Is your machine a desktop ? You can use hundreds of different models/products around. You can use same capacity or larger than existing HDD.  For example

The normal ROT's:

  • faster RPM is better
  • bigger cache is better

I believe your question was about using an External drive as if it were an Internal drive, right?

Short answer is NO -- you can't do that.
