You're very welcome

You are fortunate that the BIOS update completed before the drive failed.

It was probably a coincidence that the drive failed at the same time.

HP Recommended

Yes, probably so.  I'll have to buy an adapter to plug the old hard drive in so I can get my files.  I have an old one for IDE drives and SD cards but I don't think the SSD will be compatible.

Thanks again!

You're very welcome.

I doubt that you will be able to recover any files off the drive, but what you need to buy is a USB 3/USB-C to VNMe enclosure:

Something like this:

Amazon.com: SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E ...

I was looking at that on Amazon a little while ago, thanks!

I'm guessing that you think the hard drive is fried.  What causes that type of failure?

You're very welcome.

.

It's hard to say.

Usually, heat is one of the contributing factors.

It has been revving like it's about to take off every time I shut it down over the last month.  I should have asked someone about it.  Fortunately, most of my files are stored externally.  There are a few that I might miss though.

All in all, it's been a great computer.  I had an earlier model before this one for over 10 years.  The electric company killed it one night with brownouts.  When I tried to turn it on the next morning it was dead as a doornail.

It's possible that you may have to clean dust out of the fan, heat sink and vents.

HP Recommended

Yes, I'm sure you're right.  I'll dust it when I open it up to change the hard drive.  it was easy on my old computer, hopefully it will be that way on  this one.

HP Recommended

I replaced the SSD, not much dust in there.  I also bought the enclosure for the old one.  All files are there.  Looks like the bios update may have wiped out the boot sector.  Now I just need to create the recovery disk and get it back up and running again.  Thank you for helping me!

Anytime.  Glad to have been of assistance.

I'm surprised that the fan is running fast if there was no blockage.

You've got a spare drive you can use if you have to, or you can use the old drive for extra storage.
