HP EliteDesk 800 G2 Small Form Factor PC

Hi there, I had the SSD in my desktop die on me and I thought I'd just replace it with a spare one and since I'm there, update to a windows 11 pro copy that I had lying around. Seems like I can't boot from the usb that I created, so I was wondering if there's any workaround to get it to work. The SSD was a Samsung 840 (vintage model I know), usb gets read but gets me back to preparing automatic repair, then diagnosing, then auto repair couldn't repair your pc. Well that's not what I was trying to do.

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Hi:

The PC's processor does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements of an Intel 8th gen core or newer processor.

There is a way to get around the hardware checks though.

If you had W10 Pro running on the PC before, clean install W11 on the replacement drive.

Download the W11 ISO file from the link below (3rd option).

Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com)

Unzip and install the free Rufus v3.18 utility that I zipped up and attached below that has a setting to bypass the W11 hardware checks.

Set up the Rufus utility menu as follows...

On the right side of the program window click on the Select button and select the W11 ISO file you downloaded.

Then right under the boot selection line where you see the ISO file listed, select the Extended Windows 11 installation (no TPM/no secure boot)

Partition scheme GPT (since your PC is running W10 in UEFI mode).

Target system is the default (UEFI non CSM).

Click on the Start button on the lower right side of the screen and it will take a while for Rufus to build the bootable USB flash drive.

When it reports 'Ready,' close out of the Rufus utility.

Boot from the USB installation media you created.

You do that by turning on the PC. Immediately press/tap the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the USB flash drive that Rufus created and press the enter key,

When you get past the Install Now screen, you will be asked what version of W11 you want to install.

Select W11 Pro (f that's what you had for W10).

Then select the 'I don't have a product key' option and W11 will install and then activate after you are connected to the internet.

I recommend when you get to the screen that asks 'Where do you want to install Windows' delete every partition on the drive, leaving just one partition of unallocated space, then click Next to begin the installation.

Can you boot from ANY SSD? Asking because modern PCs have Secure Boot enabled by default, and in those cases, will not be able to boot from anything other than the internal drive.

Plus "Automatic Repair" is bad news, indicating that a Windows Update has failed and left your computer in a corrupted state -- from which it will NEVER be able to recover.  Your only hope in those cases is to reinstall Windows from scratch.

I have a desktop, not a laptop. Anyway, skipping the whole windows 11 thing I took a windows 10 image out, burnt it on my usb through Rufus, tried to install it but still it won't let me, it starts the automatic repair process even though I select the usb as a booting device. Any workaround you can think of?

I am literally trying to install from scratch but it won't let me boot from usb.

I'm aware that you have a desktop PC and forgot to change the reply to set up Rufus from another discussion I posted from notebook do desktop, so please forgive me.

I don't have any other suggestions for you to try.

Thanks, I guess the bios is set not to accept any changes to peripherals, and it doesn't allow to boot from USB

In other words, this premade is now officially paperweight :'(
