I do not see a light for the number keypad on my new HP laptop.

Should there be one, or is my laptop without that much needed indicator light?

There is a light in the letter side on the left for all caps, or small letters, so one knows what is on.

Also, the keyboard is malfunctioning, as the punctuation marks are scrambled.

I have a HP Mexico laptop, with spanish language keyboard.

I would like the keyboard to have a Spanish language function, all the punctuation marks properly working, but the rest in English.

Can that setting be done????

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

When num lk has been enabled, it can be used like an external numeric keypad.

To alternate between this numeric function and the navigational function (indicated by the directional arrows on the keys), press the num lk key and check if the keys are activated as I'm afraid there are no other ways of identifying this information.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand there's no back-lit for the number keypad & you need to change the language for it,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you want attempt changing the region under control panel to Spanish?

Did you have a back-lit of light on the number keypad when it was removed out of the box and turned on for the first time?

Have you attempted to update the keyboard drivers and the BIOS?

(Click here to find and install update, if you haven't done it yet)

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

The language on an HP computer is part of the product design. For the best computing experience, purchase a computer that matches your primary language. If you already have a computer that does not match your primary language and you cannot find or install a Language Pack, you might be able to install a new full version of Windows that matches your primary language. For more information, visit Microsoft's Local Language Program Web site (in English).

   CAUTION:

If you change the language and then contact HP Support, HP might not be able to help if the language is different than the language that shipped with the product. The language is part of the product design and HP's support services are set up to match the design of the product.

In Windows 10, you can change the display language for apps, settings, menus, and other areas in Windows. People sharing a computer can each select different display languages for their user accounts, or one person can add multiple languages to one user account and switch between them.

   NOTE:

Installing multiple language packs might affect how much hard disk space is available, as well as system performance. Install only the language packs you will use.

Finding and installing a language pack in Windows 10

Over a hundred languages are listed in the Language section in Control Panel. Many of the languages have a number of dialects, which are called regional variants in Windows. If you add a language but find that no language pack is available for download, check periodically to see if Microsoft has created a language pack for the language you want.

Follow the steps below to change languages or install additional languages.

  1. In Windows, search for and open the Control Panel.

  2. Under Clock, Language, and Region, click Add a language.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Hello Riddle Decipher

Thanks for your reply.

I will answer each question after them.....

--Did you want attempt changing the region under control panel to Spanish?

I am not sure what you mean by "the region under control".

What I want, is as much as possible to be in Engish on the laptop.

Since I  am now physically in Mexico, but I would like the region to be the USA, I would like that, IF it can be done.

The other instructions about making some language change in Windows, are too complex for me.

I only do basic stuff, so, I really am not competent to do anything else.

A "computer dummie" of sorts.  :manembarrassed:

Did you have a back-lit of light on the number keypad when it was removed out of the box and turned on for the first time?

I did not specifically check for that at that moment, so, I don't know IF it had a back-lit on the number keypad.

Have you attempted to update the keyboard drivers and the BIOS?

No, things like that are out of my scope. I am not a computer "geek" or anything close.

Just the basics -  Internet, EMail, downloads, Word perfect, saving photos, things like that is what I do.

Thank You,

Howard Kaplan

Hello again Riddle Decipher HP Agent

It seems to me that, this is a yes or no question, as to whether or not MY laptop, noted below,  has the numerical keypad button light indicator on it.

Also, I think that there may of been confusion, as perhaps, my question was poorly written.

I did not mean a light for the entire number keypad.  Rather an INDICATOR LIGHT on the "bloq num" key, that let's the user now if the number keypad is on or off, similar to the light on the bloq mayus key, that let's the user know if the keyboard letters are all caps upper case, or in lower case.

HP Laptop
model 15-bs015la
serial# [edited]
Product ID 1GR88LA#ABM

IF the answer is YES, then other steps would be needed to figure out why it is not on.

IF the is NO, then, that would close this question, no further action required.

So, is there a way you could please check with HP, and give them the info I noted above, and see if my HP laptop is or isn't equipped with the little indicator light on the bloq num key???

Sorry for the bother, your help is GREATLY APPRECIATED

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I'm glad you clarified as that helps me help you in a better way,

That said, most laptops shipped these days do not come with a light indicator on the number lock key, the only lights on the keyboard would be the Caps lock & in certain laptops the Microphone indicator.

I hope that answers your query.

And be careful going forward as sharing personal information such as serial number on public forums could be risky.

(I've had the moderator remove it for you, to ensure your safety - This applies to all public forums, not just HP)

Hello Riddle Decipher

Thanks again for your time in replying to my updated question about the bloq num key.

It appears then,  that my laptop, is without the indicator light on the number lock key.

One final question then:

Is there any "trick" or other technique,  to determine whether or not the numeric pad is on or off, other than just trying a key?

It really is VERY annoying to not know if the numeric key pad is on, or off.

I did not have that detail on my laptop features requirement list when I was looking for my laptop.

Had I known it does not have the light, (as my 2010 Toshiba has), I would not have purchased that model.

I thought that, it was a given, logcially, that an indicator light on the numeric keypad, especially on a laptop of the value of my new HP, would have that indicator light.

Thanks for the words of caution, too, and removing the information as you did.

So, in conclusion if you could just briefly comment on my question above, I will then mark this case as solved.

Thank You for your assistance. ☺

Hello Riddle_Decipher:

You're most welcome, and thank you for your time & effort trying to help me on this issue.

I really did not quite understand your explanation as far as the "external numeric keypad", (though I am aware of simply having to press the num lk {bloq num on my Spanish keyboard} to check IF the keys are activated)--->

"When num lk has been enabled, it can be used like an external numeric keypad.

To alternate between this numeric function and the navigational function (indicated by the directional arrows on the keys), press the num lk key and check if the keys are activated as I'm afraid there are no other ways of identifying this information."

That said, I had a "brain storm" (unusual for me...lol) and came up with a way to, in effect, lock on the numeric keypad.

IF the num lk (bloq num) is PRESSED DOWN, the keypad functions.  So, then, how can one keep the key in a pressed down position?  Two ways may work:

Tape it down, which is a little difficult as the neighboring keys are so close, getting enough tape on the key to secure that it stays pressed is difficult.

The 2nd method would be to find a small object that fits over the key, & is heavy enough to keep the num lk key pressed down.

How do you like my solution?

Thanks again.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As much as I like the creativity, I'm afraid using the tape or any object as such isn't something I would recommend, that said, he's what you do instead:

  • Press Win + X and click on Control Panel
  • Click on Power Plan
  • Now click on Choose what the power buttons do on the left side panel

Enable Num Lock on startup

  • Now select Change settings that are currently unavailable.

num lock not working on startup

  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended)

That’s it. Now after shutting down and reboot your Num-Lock should retain the last configuration.

Let me know how that pans out
