I've had this computer since 2005. The little green power light on the back always glows green.  But now, the computer won't turn on, and the green power light just rapidly flashes off and on. Any idea what is wrong?  A guy at Best Buy said it might be the power supply inside the computer has gone bad?

Hey there! @computerhapless,

Please share the product number of the PC to assist you better.

It certainly sounds like a hardware issue with the laptop. However, please try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

If your computer makes one or two short beeps and Windows opens after you press the power button, this indicates a successful BIOS startup.

If your computer does not start normally, a more serious hardware issue is likely occurring. Listen for beeps and check the lights.

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by a hard reset, which decreases the amount of power stored in hardware components.

  1. Shut down the computer, then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the computer.

  2. Press and hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds, then release it. The power light indicator might turn on briefly then go out.

  3. Reconnect the power cord, then turn on the computer to confirm if the issue is resolved.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps. It is certainly a hardware issue with the laptop.

Hello A4Apollo,

The product number for my 2005 Pavilion is PY1954AV#ABA, and it is a HP Pavilion a1110y computer, though when I typed that into the HP Help page a couple days ago, it was not found.  I've tried what you suggested - but it didn't seem to change anything.  When I plug the unit in, that little green power light on the back just rapidly flashes off and on, and makes a very soft beep or ticking sound with each flash.  When I push the on-off button in front, nothing at all happens - no sounds, no lights, nothing.  I can tell you that for the past year or so, I noticed the fan inside the unit seemed to run longer and somewhat louder than I ever heard it before, so I wondered if maybe the fan had finally died?  Would that cause the whole computer to refuse to start?  Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi! @computerhapless,

Thanks for writing back to us.

It certainly sounds like an issue with the system board issue.

Dear A4Apollo,

I took my computer to a local small computer service store about 5 minutes from my house on Friday.  By the next day it was fixed and ready to be picked up - it WAS the power supply.  They just replaced it and now it is working again!  Thank goodness it was something so easy to fix.  So maybe that rapidly blinking power light simply indicates it is time to replace the power supply?
