Hi @Cian24,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your OMEN By HP 40L Gaming Desktop PC is running extremely slow and experiencing operating issues like buffering media (not related to internet speed), there could be several possible causes. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check system requirements: Ensure that your PC meets the minimum system requirements for the software or games you are trying to run. Insufficient hardware specifications can lead to performance issues.
  • Close unnecessary programs: Close any unnecessary programs and background processes that might be consuming system resources. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager and check for resource-intensive processes. End any non-essential tasks to free up system resources.
  • Scan for malware: Run a thorough scan using reliable antivirus or anti-malware software to check for any malicious programs that may be slowing down your PC. Malware can often cause performance issues and unexpected behavior.
  • Update drivers: Ensure that all your device drivers, including graphics card, chipset, and audio drivers, are up to date. Outdated drivers can lead to compatibility issues and performance problems. Visit the HP support website or the manufacturer's website to download and install the latest drivers for your hardware.
  • Check for disk space: Ensure that you have sufficient free disk space on your computer's hard drive. Running low on disk space can significantly impact system performance. Delete unnecessary files or move them to an external storage device to free up space.
  • Disk cleanup and defragmentation: Use the built-in Disk Cleanup utility to remove temporary files, cache, and other unnecessary data from your system. Additionally, you can run a disk defragmentation process to optimize file placement on your hard drive, which can improve overall performance.
  • Disable startup programs: Disable unnecessary programs from starting up automatically when you boot your PC. You can do this by accessing the Task Manager's Startup tab and disabling the programs you don't need to launch at startup.
  • Adjust visual effects: Windows provides various visual effects that can impact performance. You can adjust these settings to improve system performance. Right-click on the Start button, select "System," then go to "Advanced system settings." Under the "Performance" section, click on "Settings" and choose the option for "Adjust for best performance" or manually select the visual effects you want to disable.
  • Check for overheating: Overheating can cause a computer to slow down or even shut down to prevent damage. Ensure that your PC's cooling system, including fans and vents, is clean and functioning properly. Use compressed air to remove any dust or debris that might be blocking airflow.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
