PC shutting down when loading, or once Windows is loaded.

Hi @markdale25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand that your HP Desktop is shutting down either while Windows is loading or shortly after Windows has started. This behavior can be caused by several factors, including a hardware issue, overheating, corrupted system files, a BIOS issue, or a recent Windows or driver update. We'll work through a few checks to help identify the cause.

To help us narrow this down, could you please let us know:

  • What is the exact model or product number of your HP Desktop?
  • Do you receive any error message, blue screen (BSOD), or beep/blink code before the PC shuts down?
  • Did the issue begin after a Windows update, BIOS update, new hardware installation, or power outage?
  • Does the desktop shut down at the same point every time, or is it random?
  • Are the power LED and fans still running after the shutdown, or does the PC turn off completely?

In the meantime, please try the following:

Check external connections

A loose power connection or an external device can sometimes interfere with startup.

  • Disconnect all external devices except the keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
  • Ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the desktop and a working wall outlet.
  • If possible, try a different wall outlet.

Perform a Hard Reset

A hard reset clears residual electrical charge that may prevent the system from starting correctly.

  • Turn off the desktop.
  • Disconnect the power cord.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and try powering on the PC.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

If the system remains on long enough, run the built-in hardware diagnostics to check for hardware failures.

  1. Turn the desktop off.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Run the System Tests or the Extensive Test.
  5. If any test fails, please share the Failure ID displayed.

Attempt HP BIOS Recovery

If the issue started after a BIOS update or if the BIOS may have become corrupted, try restoring it using HP BIOS Recovery.

  1. Turn the desktop off.
  2. Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
  3. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release only the Power button.
  4. Continue holding Windows + B for another 5–10 seconds and watch for the HP BIOS Recovery screen.
  5. If the recovery screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions.

Next Steps

Please let us know:

  • The exact error message, blue screen, or blink/beep code (if any).
  • Whether the desktop shuts down before Windows loads or after reaching the desktop.
  • The results of the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, including any Failure ID.
  • Whether HP BIOS Recovery launches successfully.

These details will help determine whether the issue is related to the operating system, BIOS, hardware, or power subsystem, so we can provide the most appropriate next steps.

We look forward to your update.

Take care and have a great day!
