I connect to the printer from my IPad and have done for some time. Now it is asking for a password which I cannot remember or find. Is there a way to reset this password.

Hi! @DE333, Welcome to HP forums.
I understand when you print from your iPad to the printer it is asking for the password.
Don't worry I'd like to help you out.
Did you make any changes to your printer?
Are you connecting the iPad directly to the printer or to the router?
As you mentioned when you print from your iPad it is asking for the password.
If you are connecting your Ipad to the router try the steps recommended below.
Connect the Apple iOS device to the printer through a wireless network.
Disconnect the USB or Ethernet cable.
NOTE:
When an Ethernet cable is connected to the printer, the printer cannot connect wirelessly.
Connect the printer to the network:
Printers without control panel display: Press and hold the Wireless button for three seconds until the wireless light blinks. Press the WPS button on your router, and then wait while the printer connects to the network.
Try to print. If you are still not connected, continue to the next section to try printing with Wi-Fi Direct or HP wireless direct.
Refer this article to know more information about printing using AirPrint. Link.
Also, if you are trying to connect the printer directly try restoring the network settings to default and connect to the printer again.
Restore network settings to default settings.
Press the Wireless button and the Cancel button from the
printer control panel at the same time, and then hold them for
5 seconds.
Make sure you have turned on HP wireless direct on the printer. For more information, see Connect wirelessly to the print
Turn on the Wi-Fi connection on your mobile device.
From the mobile device, connect to a new network. Use the process you normally use to
connect to a new wireless network or hotspot. Choose the HP wireless direct name from the list of wireless networks shown such as HP-Print-**-Deskjet 2540 series (where ** are the unique
characters to identify your printer.
If HP wireless direct is turned on with security, enter the password when prompted.
Print your document.
You can also try printing using HP smart app from your smartphone to your printer.
