Many thanks for all your help and advice.  My hard drive has been successfully cloned and my computer is working as normal once again.  In fact, it is noticably faster than before!

Two reasons come to mind:

 

* no need to "retry" to read/write data from/to "imperfect/bad" sectors, which increases elapsed-time;

* you may have replaced a 5400 RPM disk-drive by a 7200 RPM disk-drive -- 33% faster.
