simplesave
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since the last windows 10 update (1903), my simplesave stopped working. It goes to Preparing your backup and hangs there. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Wow, maybe - if there is actually anyone still using SimpleSave backup software.  My SimpleSave disk died years ago and I never did use the software (hated the idea of having the data inaccessible if the software failed).  I did spent some time supporting the operation, the software management, and the general setup - again, this was years ago before the whole setup turned into dinosaur dust.

The problem is that the software is years (yes, years) out-of-date.  The disks on which the software runs are likely years old - unless you transferred the software to a new NFS (storage) disk (interesting idea, likely possible, not recommended).

The software is also tied (and located on) the SimpleSave disk on which the backups are performed.  The software does not live in your File System (with the rest of your software); this means the software is self-contained in the sense that what it knows how to do is "all it knows how to do" - it cannot adapt, learn, update with changes in the Operating System.

So, if the issue is simply that the drive is no longer mounted (mapped) to Windows, then you might be able to recover by hand mapping the disk back into your File System.

Suggestion

If you do manage to get it working, even for a brief time, I strongly recommend that you disgorge (recover / copy / export) the entire data to some place it is not tied up with old proprietary software that prevents you accessing your data if the backup software stops working.

If you can find an old Windows 7 system around somewhere, connect the disk (and therefore the software) to that computer and see if you can get the software working long enough to retrieve your data and recover / export it to, well, anywhere else for safe keeping.
