I have the same problem on my HP Pavilion HP p2-1394 with Windows 8.1 . The Microsoft support person did a LogMeIn and said it was a BIOS problem and I should contact HP to update my driver. Which I did. Even after updating the recommended driver, still getting Update and Restart and then, after a day or two, still getting the same message. I'm not that technically savvy to do a re-install and afraid of losing my files and programs. Outside of downloading everything on a flash drive (which I don't have)  or  buying a new computer (which I really don't want to do and it is a hassle to set up a new one), is there no solution?

First off, this has NOTHING to do with your BIOS!  The is the standard EXCUSE that MS makes whenever an old PC has issues they either can not solve (which is usually the case) or do no want to be bothered to solve.

Second, there are no current BIOS updates for a Win8.1 PC.

This message is nearly always associated with failing Windows Update -- a Microsoft issue -- which of course THEY pass on to HP claiming it is a BIOS problem, which it is not.

Unfortunately, MS provides almost no support for Win8 these days (surprise) so if their updates are failing, there is really nothing we or you can do about it.
