after Microsoft update, Realtek is missing in the sound app

Bring up the device manager, find the problem device and "roll back" the driver

If the driver is grayed out (like above) then you need to download and install the original

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84501-85000/sp84848.exe

 

TRY ROLL BACK FIRST!

I tried that. HP support thinks my PC is too old

any way to hook up external speakers without Realtek

try the 64 bit windows 10 driver listed here

Alternately, if you have a graphics board that supports sound and speakers in the monitor then use them.
